I’m sitting here looking at the New York Fashion Week photos and have made the executive decision that fishnet and see-through plastic raincoats have little to no practical use in everyday mom life.
HOWEVER. The good news is that many of this year’s trends are really gorgeous and totally normal, and you probably have some of these types of things in your closet already.
So. I’m sharing my thoughts on what would work for real mom life: because even if you have the worst night and no sleep, you can roll out of bed, pull on those polka dots, and have the satisfaction of knowing that you, mama, are just as hip as anyone.
Trendsetting all the (run)way down to the playground.
Here’s a list of classic styles that are not satin, fishet, or see-through, and I saw them on the runway last fall and this spring:
- pleats
- ruffles
- midi-skirts (mid-shin length)
- polka dots
- florals
- puffy sleeves
- bermuda shorts (channel your inner Jackie Kennedy with me please)
- oversized buttons (and lots of them)
- tie waists and wrap shirts, skirts, and dresses (perfect for breastfeeding!)
You have to have some of this in your closet right now. But if you, like me, are looking to do the opposite of Marie Kondo and add a new piece or two this spring, here are a few personal favorites I’ve been eyeing (to shop here, or thrift ….)
They’re all washable at home unless otherwise noted:
